Executive Director

Elizabeth Cuna, hailing from Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, founded The Semilla Project fueled by a vision to intertwine community-driven change with policy and political strategies, transforming the lives of those at the frontlines of climate, racial, and workforce transitions. With a BA in Biochemistry and an MPH in Public Policy and Epidemiology from the University of New Mexico, Elizabeth has developed a unique approach combining strategy, relationships, and tireless advocacy. As a former field organizing director, she has a track record of engaging hundreds of thousands of young people and families of color in impactful programs and policy innovations. Her leadership philosophy is deeply personal, inspired by her children, Colibrí and Wiyakpa, and her commitment to enabling communities to connect with the land, find their voices, and advocate for necessary change.

Aline Castelan Gonzalez

Aline Castelan Gonzalez

Campaigns & Programs Director

Aline Castelan Gonzales, born in Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico, and a graduate in Criminology and Spanish from the University of New Mexico, has significantly shaped The Semilla Project’s initiatives. Serving as the campaign manager for “Vote Yes For Kids” and coordinator for the NM Voting Rights Act, Aline has displayed a steadfast commitment to civic engagement. Her passion for community organizing blossomed after a transformative rock climbing experience, further deepened by her ascent of Citlaltépetl, Mexico’s tallest volcano, marking her return to her homeland after two decades. Aline leads with a vision to cultivate lifelong leaders and create spaces for authentic self-expression, integrating her love for nature and community in her advocacy.

Jared Berenice Estrada

Advocacy & Programs Director

Jared Berenice Estrada, originally from Torreón, Mexico, serves as the Advocacy & Programs Director at The Semilla Project in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since migrating to the U.S. in 2008, Jared has leveraged her AA in Human Services from Santa Fe Community College to champion conservation efforts and climate justice, particularly advocating for BIPOC youth’s outdoor access. Her leadership extends to community organizing and addressing social justice issues, drawing motivation from personal experiences with anti-immigrant policies in Santa Fe. Outside her passionate work, Jared enjoys camping, couponing, creating social media content, and spending time with her dogs, Apex and Sky.

Josue De Luna Navarro

Josue De Luna Navarro

Outdoors & Land-Based Learning Director

Josue De Luna, born in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, migrated to New Mexico at age 10 and grew up as an undocumented immigrant. His family and community’s struggles propelled him into community organizing for immigrant, racial, and climate justice. Finding solace and a sense of humanity in the snowy mountain ranges of northern New Mexico, Josue now pursues IFMGA Mountain Guide certification. As the Land Base & Outdoor Director for The Semilla Project, he is an AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor, Apprentice Ski Guide and an Apprentice Alpine Guide, dedicated to uniting his community in the mountains through activities like rock climbing, trail running, and splitboarding.

Erendira Navarro Díaz

Erendira Navarro Díaz

Director of Finances

Erendira Navarro Diaz, born on December 11, 1964, in Gómez Palacio, Durango, Mexico, has a diverse background in industrial laboratory work, including positions in academia and quality control at Renault’s engine factory. After migrating to the United States in 2005, she embarked on entrepreneurial ventures in housekeeping and accounting. Erendira is a Public Ally program graduate, which honed her leadership skills, and she has furthered her expertise in QuickBooks and administrative management. Currently, she contributes her talents to The Semilla Project, a non-profit organization, where she appreciates the opportunity to grow and give back. Erendira enjoys camping and hiking with her family, activities that resonate with her commitment to family and community.

Evelyn Ramos

Evelyn Ramos

Operation & Office Manager

Evelyn Ramos, born in Juarez, Mexico, brings a rich background in Human Services to The Semilla Project, including certificates in health, wellness, public safety, child development, and as a state-certified community health worker in New Mexico. She played a crucial role in structuring the new administration department, where her skills in teamwork, accountability, and conflict resolution enhance daily operations. Evelyn’s work is driven by a personal mission to connect immigrant communities with nature, mirroring her own journey of connecting with her teenage daughter through youth-focused, nature-based initiatives. An avid camper, Evelyn embodies the spirit of positive community engagement and personal growth.

Carolina Carrillo

Carolina Carrillo

Community Organizer

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Carolina serves as a community organizer and leader at The Semilla Project. Passionate about informing and aiding her community, especially families and communities of color in New Mexico, Carolina finds joy and liberation in outdoor activities, which affirm her confidence and connection to nature. Her work at The Semilla Project has reinforced her belief that access to outdoor activities is a fundamental right for all, regardless of race, color, or gender. Driven by her family, roots, and culture, Carolina is committed to making a positive impact.

Emmet T. Yepa

Emmet T. Yepa

Outreach & Youth Development Coordinator

Emmet T. Yepa, an enrolled member of the Jemez Pueblo and a graduate from The University of New Mexico with a degree in Native American Studies focusing on Leadership and Building Native Nations, has been a pivotal figure in establishing the Walatowa Green Stars, Jemez Pueblo’s first recycling program. At The Semilla Project, Emmet spearheaded the Youth Power initiative, successfully mobilizing over 200 youth to participate in the 2024 Advocacy Education Day at the NM Legislature. Raised with strong cultural values, Emmet is dedicated to engaging New Mexico’s youth through land-based learning and climate justice, infusing his work with a deep commitment to community and cultural preservation.

Neil Pino

Outdoor Educator

Neil Pino, born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a graduate of Sandia High School dedicated to developing and leading outdoor programming for youth in his hometown. At The Semilla Project, Neil leverages his wilderness first responder certification and alpine experience to connect deeply with the community, guiding projects that uplift and inspire. Motivated by the challenges he witnessed growing up—such as crime and poverty—Neil strives to be a reliable leader and role model. His contributions have significantly raised the project’s profile through community events and national fellowships, focusing on climate justice, equity, and leadership. Neil’s passion for adventure drives him to explore diverse environments, from the Gila Wilderness to the peaks of North America’s highest volcanoes.

Andrea Avalos

Andrea Avalos

Advocacy Fellow

Andea Avalos, originally from Durango, Mexico, and now residing in Albuquerque, has shifted from studying architectural drafting to becoming a key organizer and advocacy fellow at The Semilla Project. Her role includes lobbying at the New Mexico Legislature, where she has been instrumental in passing legislation to preserve New Mexico’s natural resources. Andea’s creativity and technological savvy significantly enhance her advocacy efforts. She is deeply motivated by her commitment to environmental conservation and the supportive team at The Semilla Project. A lifelong hiker, Andea cherishes the memories created during family hikes in the Sierra Madre and now, with her colleagues.

Outdoor Fellow

Leilani Parra, born in Silver City, New Mexico, blends her academic pursuits in Finance at New Mexico State University with her role at The Semilla Project. She notably contributed to a proposal for a national monument and engaged in the Gila Wilderness centennial celebrations. Her proficiency in connecting with youth significantly enhances her outreach capabilities, driving her passion to empower young people by replicating the supportive opportunities she received. Leilani’s efforts have fostered community-focused youth groups in Luna County, aimed at creating opportunities and curbing social issues like delinquency and addiction. Her love for travel enriches her understanding of diverse cultures, aligning perfectly with her work at The Semilla Project.
